Allihies, meaning cliffs, alongside mountains and wild Atlantic ocean are the foundations of the beauty of the area.
Steeped in history, ring-forts, standing stones, and other mysteries of ancient peoples lie waiting to be discovered.
The village has a Museum, Three Bars and a shop and the Lodge is found at the top of the village next to two of the Bars.
Locally there are plenty opportunities to fish, horse ride, cycle and walk. Specially designated routes are there for both walking trips and horse rides.
A trip to the magical Dursey island and Ireland’s cable car is a must. Historical walking and guiding of the islands and its surrounds are available.
There is also a boat trip tour available which circumnavigates Dursey island and then further on to the Calf , cow and Bull rock.
Just over 200 years ago, Allihies, was the worlds leading supplier of copper ore, which has left behind some wonderful architectural artifacts not least of which is an amazing quartz beach.
Nowadays people work the land, and fish; the village boasts a thriving artistic community , as well as the new generation of home workers.
A ‘must visit’ place in Ireland, Allihies has links all over the world following local emigration to America, Europe and Australia. The closing of the Allihies mines saw hundreds leaving to try their luck in the mines of Butte Montana, where the names of Allihies’ families still thrive.
